Carl Czerny fu pianista, didatta e compositore. Nato e vissuto a Vienna, fu allievo di Beethoven, come insegnante di pianoforte ed ebbe come allievo, tra gli altri, F. Liszt. Lasciò una quantità sterminata di opere didattiche, che ancor oggi costituiscono una delle basi dell’insegnamento pianistico. Compose anche sinfonie, messe, ouvertures, cantate e musica da camera. Alla morte di Beethoven trascrisse alcune sue importanti opere, come le nove sinfonie, per pianoforte a quattro mani. Nelle sue sinfonie è evidente l’influenza dello stile beethoveniano.
Carl Czerny was a pianist, teacher and composer. Born and lived in Vienna, he was a pupil of Beethoven, as a piano teacher and had as a pupil, among others, F. Liszt. He left behind an endless amount of didactic works, which still today constitute one of the bases of piano teaching. He also composed symphonies, masses, overtures, cantatas and chamber music. On Beethoven’s death he transcribed some of his important works, such as the nine symphonies, for four-handed piano. The influence of the Beethovenian style is evident in his symphonies.
